Write into the Woods
Heritage Writer and Assistant

Heritage Writer and Assistant

Writer, storyteller and assistant for heritage, cultural and arts individuals and organisations.

Helping to spread the love of the wonderful, creative things you do.

Welcome to the part of the woods filled with cairns, crumbling stone walls and, word has it, a ghost or two.

I’m Jenny, a writer and assistant, with a fascination of creativity, sites from the past, people and the stories they have to tell.

With over ten years of marketing and over twenty years of writing experience, I can help your customers and visitors discover new stories in a way that matches your brand. Whether that’s by writing, editing or assisting in the putting together of materials.

A woman who hates having a photo taken, with long red hair, wearing glasses, sitting in front of a bookcase.
"Working with Jenny is just brilliant. She works quickly and efficiently. Communication was easy and the end result great, which gives me a lot of confidence when I send the report to the end client. Thanks Jenny, I am sure we’ll work together again in the near future."

She is fast and efficient, and tackled everything meticulously. She was also quick to understand what was required even on systems she hadn’t used before, which was a godsend at a point when time was at a premium. I can highly recommend Jenny and hope to use her services more in the future.”

My Favourite Projects (So Far)

Editing and proofreading research reports on tourism and visitor numbers for a research company, working with high streets and visitor attractions, including the National Trust.
I don’t consider myself a numbers person, but the figures on these reports were fascinating, especially coming out of the pandemic, as the economy continued to change.

Writing the marketing copy to spread awareness of and educate about the restoration of a local listed signals box on an old railway line.
As part of the local authority doing the work, my social media posts had the most engagement the organisation had ever seen, and it was a joy to get creative about how the community could use the restored signal box.
It would have been nice if the restoration team would have told me about putting the mannequin in hi-vis in the window before I turned up – scared the life out of me!

Writing and editing the stories of people included in an award-winning photography exhibition, the Power of Stories. Depending on the piece, I would edit the story already written or I would use the photo subject’s own words from notes to write their story. I’m always careful in these cases to use a person’s own words, so it’s their voice coming through.
I’m incredibly proud to have been a part of this project. The stories told are incredibly important and so interesting.

"Jenny is amazing - always quick, reliable and produced great quality work. She's helped me create copy for a national newspaper and for cultural projects."

How It Works?

If you’re interested, get in touch for a chat and quote.

Then, if you’re happy to go ahead, I’ll send over a contract agreement (or you send over yours) along with an invoice for a deposit of an agreed sum (usually 50%).

The final invoice will be with you on completion of the work.

You pay the invoice, job’s a good ‘un!

"I would recommend Jenny to anyone requiring assistance with administration or marketing work. Her organisational skills are excellent. She is able to follow instructions easily and asks pertinent questions to establish my needs if I am not clear in my instructions. She also reminds me when work is checked. Jenny is a fast learner and is able to adapt."

Question?

What's your AI Policy?

Excellent question!

Everything I write and create is the work of a human (which I am, last time I checked).

I am against generative AI.
It has been trained on stolen materials and I do not steal from my fellow creatives.

However, I do understand that other people use generative AI, despite it speeding up the destruction of the planet and your own brain cells.
I am happy to edit the words AI has spat out for you and make them better.

That’s very kind, but no thank you.

I have a nasty habit of having panic attacks in offices and find I can do a quicker, better job from the comfort of my own home.
Plus, it will save you money in travel expenses.

However, if your site, building or project is interesting, I would love to visit!

Nope. I have so many hours available for freelance work a month. Grab them while you can!

I try to keep my freelance hours to three days a week, but I’m also very flexible depending on the situation.

Abso-rutley-tutely-lutely!

I offer paid trials.

Get in touch and let’s see what kind of a trial would fit the work you’d like done.

Nope! I’m interested in all types of culture, arts and historic sites, particularly where there are interesting people and their stories to share.

However, if your site is haunted, I want to know EVERYTHING.

  1. For Frodo!
Kindness, empathy, honesty and transparency. (There’s good in this world and it’s worth fighting for.)
  1. We are the weirdos, mister.
    Embrace the creativity.
  1. Where we’re going, we don’t need dickheads.
    No greedy, unempathetic scumbags.
  1. I am a leaf on the wind, watch how I soar.
    Freedom and independence.

That’s not really a question, but I love it.

“Jenny recently undertook some editing on a project I was working on and I couldn't have been happier with the work she did. We discussed beforehand the best way for her to deliver the editing for me and settled on a way that was clear and convenient. The editing was thorough and delivered efficiently in a way that it was easy to track and understand the changes. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Jenny again and would wholeheartedly recommend her.”
